On March 1, thousands of students are expected to occupy their colleges to voice concerns over rising tuition costs and the diminishing quality of education. For so long students have found themselves helpless in the face of inaction by politicians and a culture which has chosen to ignore America’s education crisis. But re-energized by the birth of a new season and the Occupy movement, students will demand real change in America’s failing higher education system.
On the day of his album release of Black Belt Theatre, the Gold Chain General will be doing an in-store signing as well as performing some tracks from his tenth release. Instead of just showing up, you have to callto RSVP for entry. Make sure you purchase the album ahead of time if you cant wait. Otherwise, you can do what I’ll do and just purchase it at the event and ask the brother to sign it! In the meantime, go grab the promo mixtape by him and New York’s own DJ Doo Wop called The Arrival.
The Good Foot Christmas party held at Alex’s bar last week was awesome! The only place to have been at while every venue, business or whatever was closed that day! Time was ticking for me to hurry up down there to snap some photos. The music was on point, but unfortunately, the James Brown doll (Happy Birthday, btw) went missing towards the end of the night. I made the pictures black & white with the grain effects just to give it that old ’60s feeling. Check them out down below, and click on them to see the actual size.
Last month I ran into Dennis Owens who’s one of the main DJs who is one of the co-founders of the Good Foot over the past 13 years. I asked him about the Christmas events that he’s been throwing during his 13-year reign if that’s going to stop, and I was happy to hear that its always going to be happen every year! Thank goodness!
So be there this sunday in Long Beach at one of my favorite bars (although I hardly drink lol) on the East Side…
Considering tomorrow will be the first national global revolution we’ve had in YEARS, the #Occupy movement will be having sit-ins and marches tomorrow morning and the rest of the world in support will be participating. This movement was inspired by the Egyptian, London, Tunisia, Greece, Italy, and Spain uprisings from earlier this year. So, in support of my community… here’s a flyer with the details showing what we’ll be doing out in my city. More details here [via Reuters].
Remember how dope the vibe was when The Good Foot was going on over at Que Sera? The final night over at The Good Foot was one of those nights to remember and to cherish, making the thirteen years over at Que Sera so important to the Long Beach events scene. One of the regular DJs over at The Good Foot (DJ Abel) made an announcement on the final night that this new event would take over on the second fridays of the month, with the same type of music and vibes!
Tomorrow night will be the first night that Little Sister will take off, with DJ LuMan on board and a couple of others. It will be taking place at the same location with the same door cover charge and vibe! Stop by and get your groove on!
The final night kicked off with the Good Foot starting at 7pm. Dennis and Rodi (who came out from Japan) wasted NO time getting the party started, considering they’ve amassed a faithful following, with folks coming out from Orange County and Los Angeles. They KNEW that this was going to be a challenge to get ALL the folks to come inside, but as the night progressed, everyone eventually got in with ease. It’s also important to note that the line for this funky event went all the way down to the corner (see above).
Man, for all of us who have been in the LA county’s ‘alternate’ party scene, we have witnessed some of the greatest, yet dopest events close down. We have witnessed Firecracker close its doors, The Rootdown (now its.. whatever it is.. a monthly, bi-weekly?) still doing their thing. Now, here’s another chapter written with its ending being told tonight.
My experience with the Good Foot has always been fantastic! From their Halloween/Christmas events at Alex’s Bar to their monthly socials over at Que Sera, I’ve witnessed many of the regulars attend and bring more newbies to the scene. The dance floor is always crowded and there’s not one person on the floor standing around. If you didnt feel like dancing, you’d either be at the bar, playing pool, or chilling outside cooling off because the venue is so small!
So this time around, please come out and help celebrate with Dennis and Rodi, bringing their 13-year streak to an end with a bang! I will be there in attendance taking pictures.
If you havent been to anything Long Beach related or at least attend anything from my city, there must be something wrong with you. This is one of our main staples in our hood and we’re proud of having it! This is going to be our third installment of the Funk Fest and what’s dope about it is that it’s FREE-99. Here are the time slots for the performers, so now you have no excuse to come out and celebrate!
