Los Rakas: From Panama to Oakland to the SmokeOut Festival [10/16]!

Some of you have not heard of this group, but if you’re going to be at the SmokeOut Festival [at the Indonesia Stage] this saturday, you will see them sharing the stage with Erykah Badu, Rhettmatic & Bobo, Collie Budz, and many other acts. In fact, they will show you why 1) they’re taking reggaeton back to its original Panamanian roots, 2) spittin’ rhymes in English & Spanish will remind you of the passion and the tenacity that came from the old & new school hiphop artists, and 3) they’re here to stay, proving to make you guys become true believers.

Be prepared.

Los Rakas [Rico AKA Filthy Rich & Dun Dun] have penetrated the reggaeton scene back in 2006, with releasing the Panabay Twist mixtape. One of the joints, Mi Barrio, became Panama’s official anthem!  They’ve been called the ‘Latin OutKast‘, and have performed alongside artists including: Mos Def, DJ Flex (from Panama),Dead Prez, KRS-ONE, Goapele, Mystic, Zion I, Fat Joe, Colby O’Donis, Extreme, the Def Poetry Jam NY crew and others.

Fast forward to this past summer, the group came off a successful week-long tour of NYC for the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) where they won the ‘Artist Discovery’ program, winning sponsorships from Gibson, SHURE, amongst others.  They played all over New York City – Bowery Ballroom [with a 6 piece band], Santos Party House, Piano’s and SOB’s. They also have been covered in the New York Times, National Geographic, the FADER, &  XLR8R.  Los Rakas are a band on the verge of some big things.
